What is Reserve Rights (RSR)?
Reserve Rights (RSR) is an ERC-20 token designed for the Reserve protocol. It primarily serves two functions within the ecosystem: providing overcollateralization for Reserve stablecoins (RTokens) through staking, and acting as a governance token that allows holders to propose and vote on configuration changes for RTokens and Decentralized Token Folios (DTFs).
Unlike traditional stablecoins that are backed by U.S. dollars held in centralized bank accounts or custodian reserves, stablecoins created on the Reserve protocol are backed by baskets of cryptocurrencies managed entirely by smart contracts.
Additionally, Reserve Rights (RSR) differentiates itself through its staking model. Instead of relying on early stakers being paid by later participants, RSR provides real "first-loss" capital backstopping collateral defaults, earning a portion of the revenue generated by the specific RTokens staked on.
The Reserve Rights (RSR) token features two primary utilities:
- Backstop & Overcollateralization: RSR holders can stake their tokens on individual or multiple Reserve stablecoins (RTokens) to act as first-loss capital, protecting holders in the event of collateral token defaults. In exchange, stakers earn a portion of the revenue generated by the RToken.
- Governance: RSR serves as a governance token, giving holders the cryptographic right to propose and vote on changes to RToken configurations and protocol-backed index baskets (DTFs).
Reserve Rights (RSR) is an ERC-20 token deployed on the Ethereum blockchain. Consequently, it relies on Ethereum's underlying network architecture and security mechanism rather than maintaining an independent consensus protocol of its own.
Reserve was co-founded by Nevin Freeman and Matt Elder:
- Nevin Freeman, an entrepreneur whose stated objective is addressing coordination problems that hinder human potential.
- Matt Elder, an experienced engineer formerly with Google and Quixey, who oversaw the architecture and technical implementation of the protocol.
They created Reserve with the ambition to build an open, massively scalable stablecoin and Decentralized Token Folio (DTF) platform aimed at promoting economic prosperity.
The Reserve Rights (RSR) token was launched in May 2019 following an initial exchange offering (IEO) on the Huobi Prime platform.
You can use Reserve Rights (RSR) in multiple ways across the Reserve ecosystem:
- Stake for Yield: Stake RSR on one or more RTokens to provide overcollateralization and earn a portion of the revenue generated by those stablecoins.
- Participate in Governance: Use RSR to vote on or propose changes to RToken configurations and Decentralized Token Folio (DTF) index baskets.
- Trading and Transfers: Transfer RSR between compatible crypto wallets or trade it on cryptocurrency exchanges against assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), USDT, Ethereum (ETH), and USD.
Reserve aims to address the limitations and risks of centralized, fiat-backed stablecoins—such as reliance on trusted bank custodians—by enabling decentralized, asset-backed stablecoins and index baskets (DTFs) managed transparently via smart contracts. Furthermore, it addresses coordination challenges around building an accessible financial system and an asset-backed world reserve currency.
Yes, Reserve Rights (RSR) is open-source. Its smart contract code—including the core token logic (ReserveRights.sol), vesting schedules (TokenVesting.sol), and timelock safety controls (SlowWallet.sol)—can be publicly reviewed on GitHub.
The RSR token was pre-mined with a fixed total supply of 100 billion tokens. Distribution occurred through an initial exchange offering on Huobi Prime (3%), allocations to project operations (2.85%), and private investors (1%), while significant proportions were held in smart contracts such as the "Slow wallet" and linear vesting contracts that unlock according to deterministic schedules.
Governance for the Reserve protocol is driven by RSR token holders. Token holders can participate in on-chain governance to propose, review, and vote on adjustments to the parameters, configurations, and collateral asset baskets of RTokens and Decentralized Token Folios (DTFs).
The long-term vision of Reserve progresses through three main stages:
- Bundle all of crypto: Create asset-backed tokens using existing crypto assets and yield-bearing DeFi positions.
- Bundle all assets in the world: Expand baskets to incorporate securities, commodities, fiat currencies, and real-world assets.
- Endgame: Establish a fully decentralized, asset-backed world reserve currency that provides an open, stable, and accessible alternative for global finance.
