A perpetual future, or perp, is a contract that tracks an asset's price but, unlike a standard future, never expires. A funding rate keeps its price close to the asset's market price: when the perp trades above it, buyers pay sellers, and when it trades below, sellers pay buyers, usually every 8 hours. BitMEX introduced the crypto perpetual swap in 2016.

Each token is the governance or utility token of a perp DEX or of the blockchain it runs on. Hyperliquid (HYPE) is staked to secure the Hyperliquid blockchain, pays gas and is used in governance. dYdX (DYDX) is staked on dYdX Chain, where stakers receive protocol fees in USDC. Part of GMX's protocol fees is used to buy back GMX.
